In a surprise
move, President Trump announced Friday morning that he would not be cutting
funding for the National Endowment for the Arts. In a tweet at 2:58 AM eastern,
he expressed his rationale:
“Just looked at
NEA spending. Only need to cut “Piss Christ” and all other fake art. Will use
that money to Build Great Art Again. #BGAA #NoFakeArt”
When asked what
he meant by “building great art again,” Trump responded in a series of tweets:
“Promised in my
campaign that I would do something about the horrible state of the inner
cities. I mean, you just look at it, it’s terrible.”
“So what we’re
gonna do, I’m telling you, it’s gonna be spectacular. We’re taking the finest
black soprano. Leontyne Price. She’s sung with all the greats. Parravotti, all
of them.”
“We’re giving
her a statue, right out in front of the White House. Top shelf statue carver,
exquisite Carrara marble. This art will remind the inner cities that one day
they can be great too!! #BGAA #MAGA”
Later Friday
morning, the Reverend Al Sharpton was asked about Trump’s plans.
“Wait, what? A
statue of the Queen in front of the White House?” Sharpton reacted, with
eyebrows raised. “That sounds like the most sensible thing he’s done so far.”
After returning
home and reading the full set of tweets, Sharpton reportedly shook his head and
mumbled:
“Come, Lord
Jesus.”
